Some thoughts on GCCC (Part I)

When Bishop Galante met with us at St. Mary's in Malaga he held up Gloucester County Community Church as a model for what the Catholic Church should be striving toward. Of course, GCCC is not a Catholic Church. It's a "nondenominational" evangelical protestant church that uses--to borrow a Disney term--edutainment to reach its...well...its audience. The bishop has on other occasions mentioned GCCC. More will be forthcoming about GCCC.

Strangely, if you check out their website, you'll notice there are lots of broken or empty pages and sites they link to. On such pages/sites there are lots of flash and no content. Metaphor? No comment. For an example of what I'm talking about, just look here (this is a radio ministry that the pastor had and I have listened to previously) and here (their youth ministry page). I'm not picking on them as I'm no techie myself, but I admit I thought it was a little odd that this ultra-modern church-of-tomorrow has nothing up on its youth ministry page. I of course thought it was especially humorous because this is precisely the thing that Bishop Galante continually emphasizes.

For your enjoyment, I also submit this Youtube link to a portion of one of their "worship" services. Click here. Yikes.

Possibly most alarming, to my mind, is this (link here):

We were then directed to page two of the Bulletin where Pastor outlined a marvelous journey to lay hold of the Heart of God. At the altar were baskets containing envelopes in which had been placed cash - some envelopes contained $100, some $50, some $30, some $20 and some $10. After a time of prayer Pastor directed the entire congregation to come forward and get an envelope, with which to bless someone who could never repay the kindness. Yes, that is right! GCCC gave money to each and every person 13 years and older that was present.

They gave out money during "worship." Ummm...ok. Guess we should've visited a few weeks ago, huh?

Why Save St. Mary's?

What's true for OL Queen of Peace, Pitman & Assumption, Wildwood Crest is also true for St. Mary's Malaga:

"The people in Pitman bought that ground and built that church and it belongs to them. You can't just take it away."

-Anthony Mecca, Queen of Peace Parish, Pitman (also on the slate for closure), May 8, 2008

"This is God's house. Let us live here with God as we've done all these years."

-Fred Spiewak, Assumption Parish, Wildwood Crest, June 11, 2008
