Dozens of priests gathered at St. Charles Borromeo Thursday morning with Bishop Joseph Galante to ask questions about the Camden Diocese's plans to merge churches, but they were met by a crowd of about 40 protesting parishioners.
The group of Catholics from throughout the diocese are part of a newly formed coalition, called the Council of Parishes, who hope to reverse the bishop's plan and save their churches from closure.
Standing in the slow, drizzling rain with picket signs in hand, the parishioners recited prayers as the priests slowly entered the church. Many of them looked down or away, but a few acknowledged their parishioners with a thumbs up, or a request to "pray for us."

I went to the protest last Thursday and thought it was a really good. St. Mary's had a lot of people there, at least 16 that I saw. The Bishop must have been surprised. It was good too to see all the other churches that are feeling the same way we are.
